T’was ever thus

….even as a socialist who loves the “nanny state”,

There’s always a but, isn’t there? Or in this case

….I consider it a huge overreach

That nanny state should indeed control what everyone does. But not, I mean obviously not, the thing that I desire to do.

The actual thing here is being fined for taking children out of school - during term time, obviously - to take them on holiday. And, well, whatever. No, really.

But it is fun, isn’t it? There should be all these rules for thee but not for me. What you do must be constrained, prescripted, prescribed, by that all-seeing state while my desires should be as free as the birds. Without that really rather important recognition that there are 78,999,999 thees out there and only that one me demanding my freedom.

Why not actually have a liberal polity, where all 79 million of us get to do whatever with only those things which actively harm another being controlled? You know, liberty?

We dunno, it’s an idea that might catch on. Perhaps we should try it someday?
