Britain has spent much of the past two decades grappling with sluggish productivity, weak investment and anaemic economic growth. Living standards have stagnated, the tax burden has risen, and an increasingly large state is being supported by an economy that too often struggles to generate the growth required of it.

But is Britain really condemned to managed decline?

Drawing on the arguments of his new book, Can We Be Rich Again? The Surprising Potential of Britain’s Economy, Sir Jeremy will make the case that the foundations for renewed prosperity remain firmly within Britain’s grasp. From productivity and investment to entrepreneurship, technology and the role of government, the evening will explore what has gone wrong with the British economy — and what policymakers must do differently if the country is to become significantly richer once again.

How can Britain rediscover sustained economic growth? What lessons should we draw from countries that have successfully raised productivity and living standards? And, after serving at the very heart of government, what does a former Chancellor believe Westminster still gets wrong about creating prosperity?

Sir Jeremy served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2022 to 2024. He has also served as Foreign Secretary and, for almost six years, as Secretary of State for Health, making him one of the longest-serving and most experience Cabinet ministers of recent decades. His new book, Can We Be Rich Again?, examines Britain's economic potential and sets out his prescription for restoring growth and prosperity.
