1776 Lecture with Rory Sutherland

  • National Liberal Club 1 Whitehall Place London SW1A 2HE United Kingdom (map)

On Monday, 9th March 2026, join us to mark a monumental milestone - the 250th anniversary of the publication of The Wealth of Nations.

To celebrate the legacy of Adam Smith, we are delighted to welcome Rory Sutherland - Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy UK and Britain’s most bohemian adman - to the National Liberal Club.

Exactly 250 years after the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, Rory reflects on how the seismic events of 1776 forged the modern world. With his characteristic wit and flair, he will weave together the significance of Smith’s economic masterpiece with other pivotal milestones of that year, including the American Revolution, the invention of the Steam Engine, and Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Join us as we pay tribute to the 250-year legacy of Adam Smith and the dawn of modernity.
