Global Energy Security Index 2026

The Adam Smith Institute's Global Energy Security Index 2026, authored by Dr. Oliver McPherson-Smith and Jasper Ostle, ranks 187 countries on their energy security, assessing dispatchable electricity, energy diversity, import security and ability to pay.

The UK ranks 41st globally, behind Romania and war-torn Ukraine, with declining domestic energy production and growing dependence on intermittent electricity generation exposing significant vulnerabilities. The report argues that expanding nuclear power, resuming North Sea oil and gas licensing, and lifting the fracking moratorium could help propel the UK to 9th place globally, demonstrating that energy security is ultimately a policy choice.
