Oliver McPherson-Smith, Fellow


Oliver McPherson-Smith is a Senior Fellow at the Adam Smith Institute. He is currently the Director of New International Ventures at Double Eagle, the leading independent oil and gas producer in the United States.

Prior to joining the private sector, Dr. McPherson-Smith served as the inaugural Executive Director of the National Energy Dominance Council and Deputy Assistant to the President in the White House. He was also a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Dr. McPherson-Smith earned a doctorate in political science from the University of Oxford, a master of arts in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University, and a bachelors degree with honors in Land Economy from the University of Cambridge. His peer-reviewed research has been published in several leading academic journals. Dr. McPherson-Smith’s first book, Crude Calculations: Regime Stability, Economic Liberalization, and the Energy Transition, will be published by Cambridge University Press is late 2025.
